Currents of Courage, a Wilderness Voice Project film, is a full length documentary that features Idaho2Fly, a nonprofit organization that supports Idaho men with cancer through the sport of fly fishing, and facilitated activities and support programs. The film tells the story of seven retreat guests who were profoundly moved and changed through Idaho2Fly’s therapeutic retreat experience and group activities — each finding what medical treatment could not provide — hope, rest, renewed purpose and something they didn’t know they needed — community and the unbreakable bond of brotherhood.

Currents of Courage is produced by David Nehmer and directed and edited by his daughter, Christen Skinner, a two-time Emmy Award-winning editor. Named a Hot Film in the Making by the Roy W. Dean Grant, the film will have its world premiere September 17, 2026 at the Egyptian Theatre in Boise, Idaho.

BVFF Annual Member and Volunteer Appreciation Picnic

Please join the BVFF club members for the annual BVFF Picnic. We have moved the event to September to avoid the heat of July, and knowing you are all out fishing!

The picnic will be in lieu of the monthly club meeting

This is a family event, and a club tradition from its inception. We also celebrate the efforts throughout 2026 of all of our volunteers. If you were a volunteer for the Expo 2026 or any other BVFF project, please consider joining us for some fun and food in the park.

The event will be catered. PLEASE NOTE that an accurate head count and commitment to attendance will be important for us to manage the expenses. If you find you cannot attend after registering, please cancel your reservation.

You may want to bring:

Lawn chairs (There are picnic tables and benches)
Your beverage choice (water will be available)
Please, no glass bottles

To attend this event, please register by name, including guests, so that we have an accurate head count. You will be asked to check in at the event, and name tags will be available.

Welcome to McCall in the Fall - Sponsored by BVFF

This is the outline of our September McCall outing. Learn about the fishing in this beautiful mountain area with BVFF club members and their guests. Hopefully the weather will cool and the skies beautiful! I expect fall fishing to be outstanding. Last years participants all caught fish, including the beginners.

As you register for the outing, we will provide more details on the exact locations, times and conditions. We will be using email as the primary means of communication, however, I would like to publish a list of members attending that includes mobile phone numbers. This will facilitate the formation of groups for fishing. We encourage fishing in small groups.

Lodging:

Now is the time to confirm your lodging plans. There are numerous hotels, rentals and campsites available in the area. One RV/Camping area is Ponderosa State Park - make reservations at getoutside.idaho.gov. I plan to tent camp (free primitive camping with area outhouse) at Boulder Meadow Reservoir. ID 55 to Elo Road (one mile south of McCall). Elo Rd east for 3 miles to Boulder Lake Rd. Boulder Lake Rd for 4 miles to the reservoir. You can access the Louie Lake and Bolder Lake trail heads from this dry camping area. There is limited or no cell service at this area.

What about fishing?

McCall Angler/Drift West fly shop at 616 N 3rd St#115 McCall ID. https://themccallangler.com/ . I recommend you all visit this shop to learn about local fishing spots along with purchasing flies and equipment. I have experienced my best fishing results (when fishing a new and unfamiliar area) when I visit a local fly shop, purchase a map and flies, and ask where I should go to catch.

I plan on fishing Louie Lake (“trophy” lake - most likely on Thursday 8/17 after setting up camp) for Cutthroat, Boulder Lake (rainbow and cutthroat Friday), and Brundage Reservoir (rainbow, cutthroat, cutbow trout Saturday). If you don't want to hike, you can drive to Brundage Reservoir and Goose Lake, although water levels might be low in September. For beginners, I recommend Browns Pond and Scout Pond which are both stocked and you can drive to them. You should be able to find all of these waters using Google maps. There are 100’s of waters to fish near Long Valley. For those who want a challenge, there is a small group who will hike a challenging trail to Shaw Twin Lakes for Grayling. You will need a solid 4 wheel drive vehicle to access the trail head. At the meetups and through email, you can let the group know where you will choose to fish so we can form small groups for safety and comradery.

Friday Sept 18 from 6-8pm. Rotary Park. Bring your own food and chair. 335 W Lake St, McCall, ID. There are picnic tables and bathrooms there. I will provide water, soda and desert.

Saturday Sept 19 from 5-7 food trucks/trailers in the central business section of McCall, on E Lake St near the intersection of First St. Next to Yacht Club on the lake side of E Lake St.

Sunday Sept 20: There are no scheduled meetups to provide flexibility for fishing and returning home.

2026 CLEARWATER SPEY GATHERING (26 Sep 2026)

If you cast a 2 handed rod, or are just "Spey Curious", you should consider going to a Spey Clave. There are several in the Pacific Northwest to consider, but Poppy's Red Shed Spey Gathering is the best!

Spey claves are a great way to start your journey into 2-handed casting, and to improve your skills. They offer:

Demonstrations by expert spey casters
A welcoming environment to ask questions
The chance to try new gear before investing
A sense of belonging within the fly fishing community

This stillwater fishery is known for some fantastic Fall fishing. Come on out to try your hand at catching some of the largest rainbow trout southwest Idaho has to offer.

There are three lakes open to fishing in Duck Valley. Mountain View and Sheep Creek Reservoirs allow gas powered motors. Lake Billy Shaw is fly fishing only and boat motors are restricted to electrical only.

You must have a Duck Valley tribal fishing permit to fish this event. A daily fishing permit (Ages 14+) is $25. An annual single-rod fishing permit is $150, which also allows you to disperse camp on the reservation for no additional charge, for the duration of the permit. Permits may be available at some local fly shops and at ACE Hardware in Duck Valley. The link below will provide access to the Shoshone-Paiute Tribal Website for fishing and camping permits:

5 and 6 weight fly rods are typically used at this fishery with floating, intermediate and sinking lines. Fishing reports from previous outings indicate #6 and 8 weighted black, brown or olive leeches fished deep and a #14 root beer and wine-colored chironomids with a fine silver wire rib, fished on or near the bottom, can be productive.

Temperatures in the morning typically range from the mid 30s to 40s, with afternoon temps in the low 50s to the high 60s. Be prepared for rain, snow, and lots of WIND!

Camping with hook-ups is available at both Mountain View and Sheep Creek Reservoirs. Dispersed camping is available at all three bodies of water. The BVFF outing host will camp at Mountain View Campground. Look for the BVFF feather flags. Reservations can be made on the tribal website or by calling 208-759-3246 and asking for June or Annmarie.

Directions from Boise: Take I-84 East to Mountain Home, then take Idaho 51 Hwy to Duck Valley. Driving time is approximately 2+45. There is gasoline and diesel fuel available in Duck Valley.

If you're a steelhead fishing veteran or a newbie, the Clearwater River can provide some terrific fall fishing.

Preliminary 2026 B-run data suggests a decent run this year comparable with 2025. The B-run leads us to the Clearwater River.

From Boise	80 miles. Under good road conditions this is a 90 minute trip. From Boise goes east on I84. At the second Mt Home exit, Pilot station, turn north on Highway 20. In roughly 20 miles take the turn off to Fall Creek/Anderson Ranch. Go over the dam then turn left down to the river. Follow the road to Village Boat Ramp/Reclamation village. Beware of road conditions based on weather. Drive carefully. Snow tires, chains and 4WD are recommended.

In-Person Whitefish Derby Rules:

1. All participants must be current BVFF members for 2027 or their guest to qualify for prizes.

2. Each participant must be registered for the event. Registration is available online or in person on the event day at the Village Boat Launch. Guests are registered through the member and the guest's name and email will be provided.

3. All participants will check-in prior to fishing and immediately after fishing with the coordinator at the Village Float Boat Launch. Failure to check-in before and/or after fishing will result in disqualification from receiving prizes awarded.

4. Derby participants will submit their cell phone/camera photos no later than 3:30 PM at the Village Float Boat Launch check-in (You must report the number and longest fish of all species caught.) For your submittal a picture of the whitefish held next to a readable tape measure, BVFF measuring trough, or any obvious measuring device is required. BVFF measuring troughs for derby use will be available at the Village Boat Launch check-in.

5. Fish Length Determination - Total length of the fish is the average of both points of the tail. The host will determine the length. In the event of an appeal, a panel of three participants will be assembled to determine the length.

6. To Pinch or NOT to Pinch - Please do not pinch the tail (unless it is the next IDFG State record) as this requires additional handling of the fish and is not necessary. If anyone chooses to do a tail pinch, this will be the final length of the fish. Anyone not doing a tail pinch will have 1" added to the length of their fish.

7. All participants agree to Catch-and-Release of all fish landed. Also, to use the utmost care to handle all fish landed and to Keep 'Em Wet.

8. In case of a tie, this is the process to determine leader board placement:

o Based on the photo time-stamp, entries will be placed in order beginning with the earliest caught during the derby fishing time

o The BVFF Whitefish Derby Coordinator(s) is the final judge for leader board placement

9. BVFF requests that photos be provided for posting on the BVFF Facebook Page, send to Outings@bvff.com.

10. The winning participant agrees to prepare the food for the 2028 In-Person Whitefish Derby (BVFF will pay for all materials and provide shelter and cooking equipment)

Fishing:

As almost exclusively bottom feeders, whitefish will readily take a variety of nymphs, especially those tied with bead heads. A few of the more popular patterns are Golden Stonefly Nymphs, prince nymph, pheasant tail, zug bug, two-bit hooker, zebra midge, hare’s ear, Utah Killer Bug, Sexy Walt's Worm, and copper johns. Fly size ranges between 10 and 16 with size 12 being a good place to start. "Rainbow Warriors" and Zebra Midges in size 18-22 have also been very consistent Whitefish attractor patterns.

This event is a BVFF sponsored event.

This is a great family time and angling event with large Bluegill and Bass fishing. Beside the pond at the sand dunes there is excellent fishing at the Snake River, Cove Arm, Crane Falls, Bruneau River and CJ Strike Reservoir. Bring your float tube or pontoon boat. In the past Pico Spiders, Pico Blanco’s (aka Blanco Pico), white spiders, small bass plugs, mouse patterns, and Stayner Ducktails have been productive, but check with the local fly shops for recommendation.

Outing Type:	Overnight trip Silver Creek, Big Wood River & Magic Res. Early season fishing can often mean high water flows on the rivers, so a spring creek is a good destination choice. Alternatively Silver Creek is easy driving distance from other waters, including: · Big Wood River · Magic Reservoir, and its outlet · Big Lost River (~ 1+ hr)

Camping/Lodging:	For those seeking RV reservations at Picabo Angler, use this link. https://www.reserveamerica.com/explore/picabo-angler-rv-park/PRCG/1061600/overview The group will be camping at the Idaho Fish & Game campground at the Hayspur Fish Hatchery, just off highway 20—about 8 miles past the junction of Highway 20 and Highway 75 (North side). The camp ground is a large grass meadow with a few small trees (Beware: Russian Olive trees for those with allergies), and can accommodate tents, campers, or small trailers. There is water available, and vault toilets. It is first come, first served for space, and with no fee. There are also limited camping spots at Idaho Sportsman access points (Point of Rocks), East, and West. For those looking for a motel/hotel room, we recommend you do a google search for locations in the area. These rooms will book early, so call now.
Boat/Float Tube access:	Floating Silver Creek is a great way to fish the creek. However, be aware that Idaho Fish & Game regulations REQUIRE that you use a float tube-- one that places you down in the water. Pontoon style kick boats do not meet this requirement. The creek is relatively shallow in most places, so when floating, wear wading boots, but not flippers. The creek can be busy, so good etiquette and consideration to fellow anglers is always appreciated
Wading/Shore Fishing:	Limited in the Silver Creek area, but possible.
Distance from Boise:	145 miles (2 hours and 15) Go east on Interstate 84, at the second Mountain Home exit, turn north on Idaho 20
Other:	There are also limited camping spots at Idaho Sportsman access points (Point of Rocks), East, and West. Picabo Angler is located inside the Picabo store and has a full line of fly fishing tackle. The store also serves food. Picabo Angler has been an exhibitor at the Western Idaho FF Expo for several years now, please invite them back for EXPO 2027. Hayspur campground is in relatively close proximity to a number of access points on Silver Creek: · West Silver Creek Access · Nature Conservancy Silver Creek Preserve (Remember to sign in at the hut) · Point of Rocks · East Silver Creek Access · Hwy 20 Bridge The campground is also a good location to fish Magic Reservoir. Teton & Henry's Fork Rivers & Henry's Lake Outing - 2027 (15 Jul 2027)

Teton & Henry's Fork Rivers & Henry's Lake Outing July 15 through July 18, 2027

The Teton River is a 64-mile-long tributary of the Henry’s Fork of the Snake River in

Southeastern Idaho. The river promotes excellent fly-fishing opportunities for all skill level fly

fishers.

There also numerous other river systems within a two hour drive of Victor, ID (where the host

will be), including the Henry’s Fork of the Snake River, South Fork of the Snake River South of

Palisades Reservoir, Henry's Lake, the Gros Ventre in Wyoming, and several Spring creeks.

The fish:

Cutthroat, Rainbow, Cut-bow, Brook, Bull Trout, and Whitefish are present in the Teton River. In

2025 Idaho Fish and Game stocked 5,000 Rainbow Trout triploid trout in the Teton River.

The Travel:

HQ for this outing will be in the City of Victor, Idaho. Driving time from Boise is approximately 5

3/4 hours.

Equipment and fly recommendations:

All of the fly shops in the Boise area as well as Three Rivers Ranch in Driggs, World Cast

Anglers in Victor and West Bank Anglers in Jackson, Wyoming can assist in fly selection. That

said, nymphing patterns such as Pheasant Tails, Prince Nymphs, Gold Ribbed Hares Ears,

Copper John’s, Kaufman Stoneflies, Golden Stones, Zebra Midges and Jedi Master’s can all

work well. I would also consider bringing a wide selection of perdigons to include Spanish

Bullets, Blowtorch’s, Duracell’s, Fire Starters, etc.

Dry fly patterns would include PMD’s, BWO’s, Adam’s, a variety of Caddis patterns, Ants,

Beetles, Hoppers and Wolly Buggers.

Regarding rod selection; 2, 3, and 4wt 10’-10’+ tight line/Euro rods will work well for those that

wish to tight line. Otherwise 4wt, 5wt, and 6wt fly rods with floating lines are appropriate for all

of these waters.
