Al and Gretchen Beatty of BT's Fly Fishing are hosting Fly Tying Fridays-- a Zoom get-together to watch and learn some new fly tying techniques. These sessions will be held through March in into April. See BVFF calendar for these events.
BT’s Go-To Hoppers: This week we offer the last in our spring series of flies and a pattern you’ll surely need this coming fishing season. Yes, we are talking about grass hoppers! The two patterns we’ll offer are the Molly Hopper from our book EZY Trout Flies and it’s cousin the RL Hopper. The “Molly” is easy to tie, is unsinkable, AND has “X-style” rubber legs. The RL Hopper is tied the same but we use elk (or deer) hair for the head and the rubber legs are knotted. Some tiers find the knotted rubber legs difficult to position on the hook but we have the answer AND a surprise or two just to make the last spring session interesting.
Materials Needed: Elk or deer body hair, hooks, thread (6/0 or 3/0, yellow, choice), yellow 2-mm foam (both patterns), Poly Yarn (for the Molly Hopper), rubber leg material (color of choice) for both patterns. The two are so similar we only need one recipe for both.
Go-To Hoppers
- Hook: Dry, 2XL- 4XL, size 12 – 6
- Thread: Yellow (color of choice & size)
- Body: Yellow Poly Yarn (choice)
- Wing: Brown 2-mm foam or “prepared” pheasant feather
- Head: Poly Yarn (bullet style) or elk or deer (half-head style)
- Legs: Rubber leg material (straight or knotted)
- Head/collar: Thread
