Boise River New Dry Creek South Channel Gravel Augmentation Project

Project Location

Below the New Dry Creek diversion dam located in Garden City between the head of Eagle Island and Glenwood Bridge.

Description:

Loss of spawning gravel is a systemic problem below hydroelectric dams and is a known issue in the Boise River system. The Boise River has a good population of rainbow and brown trout, but the lack of spawning habit limits their ability to reproduce. Gravel augmentation is an approach to improve trout spawning habitat that has been done successfully in the Boise River by local Trout Unlimited Ted Trueblood Chapter.  We propose to add gravel to a side-channel that has good habitat for spawning trout.

A follow up to this project placed a sign near the gravel augmentation site explaining the life cycle of trout and the importance of the gravel.

Kent Christensen and Klaus Kissman of BVFF and the habitat information sign near placed near the gravel augmentation area of the Boise River.  The sign provides education to the public on the life cycle of trout, and the importance of providing gravel beds for spawning.
