Status of South Fork Boise River Rainbow Trout Population Following Recent Habitat Disturbances
It’s no secret that the SFBR downstream of Anderson Ranch Reservoir is one of the most popular and productive trout waters in southern Idaho. Over the last 30 years, fish and anglers have benefited from relatively stable conditions, that is until the large wildfires of 2013 and subsequent sediment/debris slides of 2013 and 2014. These natural (though likely human exacerbated) occurrences have altered the watershed, aquatic habitats, and fish populations. IDFG biologists and others have been working to understand how these “alterations” have impacted fish populations and to determine responses, especially from a reproduction and recruitment standpoint. Also, federal agencies, USFS and USBOR, have been planning and implementing restoration activities to help the watershed responds in a positive manner. Art Butts, will present a synopsis of recent fish monitoring activities conducted by IDFG, and will also review the 2014 sediment flushing pulse. Art will also briefly describe other restoration activities that are in the planning stages.
Art Butts is a Southwest Regional Fish Biologist and has held that position for the past six years. He has been with Idaho Department of Fish and Game for 11 years. He holds MS and BS degrees from Utah State University in Fisheries and Wildlife sciences.
