June General Membership Meeting

  • This meeting is in-person at the Elks Lodge Boise, AND available via Zoom link online
  • Please register your planned attendance method.
  • Elks Lodge in-person attendance will be limited
  • If attending in-person, please consider masking when not eating or drinking.

For those who attended online in May we would like to apologize for the poor audio during the featured presentation.  We have discovered providing A/V for both the in-person audience and the online audience is more challenging than we realized.  We are learning this process, and hope that our corrections for June will result in a high quality broadcast and presentation for those who are unable to attend in person.

Biology, Management and Fishing Opportunities for Cutthroat Trout Across Idaho

Martin Koenig

Sportfishing Program Coordinator

Idaho Department of Fish and Game

Given BVFF’s recent interest in organizing a “Cutthroat Trout Slam”, Martin will be diving into the biology, management and fishing opportunities for Cutthroat Trout across Idaho. Martin’s presentation will provide an overview of Idaho’s three Cutthroat Trout subspecies: Westslope, Yellowstone, and Bonneville Cutthroat trout.  He will include a brief history of the species, their distribution in Idaho, and their typical life cycle and migrations. Martin will also highlight some recent fisheries management and conservation actions surrounding these species. Martin will provide some recommendations where anglers can find Cutthroat Trout, and also demonstrate some of the online tools available to find more information on how to locate these native gamefish.

Martin holds a bachelor’s degree in Fish, Wildlife, and Conservation Biology from the University of California Davis, and a Master’s degree in Fisheries Biology from Utah State.  Martin first began working in Idaho in 2003 while conducting his thesis research focused on Yellowstone Cutthroat Trout in the Teton River, and soon after, landed a job with the Idaho Department of Fish and Game. During Martin’s 16 years with Idaho Fish and Game, he’s worked in a variety of fisheries research and management roles, and is currently the Sportfishing Program Coordinator.  That’s a fancy title for a guy that does a little bit of everything, like writing species management plans, coordinating sturgeon conservation efforts, and helping with the process of setting new fishing rules.  Martin is a steering committee member of the Western Native Trout Initiative, where he helped develop the 12-state Western Native Trout Challenge. He also administers the Idaho State Record Fish Program, where he launched Idaho’s very successful “catch and release” state record program in 2016. Thanks to the tutelage of BVFF’s own Ralph Stark, Martin learned some stuff about fly fishing in 1995, and has remained an avid angler and fly tyer.
